What Exactly Is Going On in My Body During Menopause?

Menopause itself isn’t so bad, but the side effects can drive you crazy. The precise definition for menopause is the spwoman in robe cartoonecific point in time when the last menstrual period of your life occurs. But the more common use of the word includes the time span before and after the stopping of menstruation.

Menopause is the time when a woman’s reproductive system not only shuts down but goes into reverse to a state similar to puberty. Sometime around her late forties or early fifties (the average age is 51.5), a woman’s ovaries cease functioning and her menstrual periods stop. She can no longer become pregnant. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But it’s not. The glands, hormones, and reproductive organs all must work together in the shutting-down process, and it can be a rough transition for all those directly (and indirectly) involved.

You might compare the whole picture to a large, complex factory, changing from making cars to building airplanes. The factory doesn’t stop making cars one day and then suddenly and smoothly make airplanes the next. A whole revamping is needed, and then there may be many hitches before the factory is smoothly making the new machines. But rest assured, the new factory will eventually make those airplanes in perfect order.
