Do All Women Suffer at Menopause?

Forty million women in the United States are currently of menopausal age. How many have a difficult time? No one knows for sure. Woman in robe cartoonResearchers' reports of women vary with each study. Some authorities state that at least 75 percent to 80 percent of menopausal women experience moderate to severe hot flashes, sleeplessness, strange skin sensations, mood swings, and heart palpitations. Our survey of 436 women revealed that 70 percent had most of the usual physical problems: hot flashes, vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, painful joints, sleep problems, and heart palpitations. Hot flashes were reported by 87 percent.

The number of women who suffer emotional problems because of hormone imbalance at menopause is even more difficult to determine. Some experts feel that many previously stable women have great difficulty managing ordinary life stresses, until their bodies adapt to the drastic decline in estrogen.
