It can be. Drinking by midlife women many times is not simply a social experience but an escape. The midlife woman with a drinking problem has an emotional personality that is often marked by low self-esteem, self-pity, a tendency toward self-punishment, resentment, and an inclination to project blame. She is impatient, irritable, and marked by depression and anxiety. She looks at alcohol, or drugs, as a means of helping her cope with life.
If you need a drink in order to keep your world in order, then you really ought to seek help. You need to work through the issues that are causing stress and depression. Identify your losses and take positive action to reconstruct your life so that those losses don't continue to eat you up and force you into addiction.
