Right now you may feel like a rotten piece of rubbish, but that is not the truth. You are special, even if your mate doesn’t think so remind yourself of your good qualities and strengths. Value yourself whether or not anyone else does.
Your self-image has been influenced from birth by the responses you’ve received from the important people around you. If the majority of your life experiences have been happy and successful, your view of yourself is probably positive.
If you have been abused, ridiculed, or ignored, your self-esteem is likely to be poor. But perhaps something has happened in later life to change your physical appearance or your abilities. As a result, your self-image has been lowered. Life’s tragedies--such as deaths, illnesses, and disappointments--can be so heavy and so numerous that your view of yourself suffers serious damage. Certainly, your mate’s negative response to you right now is battering your self-worth.
Although people and events have been important in developing who you are, you can build your own self-esteem. You are not totally dependent on others for your value. The best place to find out your worth is from the Bible. God values you and wants you to value yourself. God made you in His image (Genesis 1:26), you are an asset to God (Ephesians 1 and 2), plus, God knows you and loves you (Ephesians 4:16). The Creator of the entire universe is thinking about you constantly. That ought to tell you that you’re precious!
Start a daily habit of reading the Bible beginning with the Psalms. Another powerful little book that will change your view of yourself is 31 Days of Praise, by Ruth Meyer.
