Young children often blame themselves when a parent leaves. You need to reassure them that they were not the cause. They also fear that you might also leave them. They feel helpless and frightened about being abandoned, so they need to know you aren't going to leave them. They may not verbalize their fears, so you need to look for opportunities for them to talk. This is a difficult time for everyone in the family, but open communication and caring for each other will ease the pain somewhat.
