Q. Is it normal for someone in midlife to act as though their family are strangers to them and only do what is required of them?

A. Unfortunately, this is common. People in a midlife crisis tend to think with their emotions, rather than their minds, so they do things that are awkward, crazy, and confusing. Because they are acting almost exclusively emotionally, they make their most important relationships very awkward. Add guilt to the equation and they will avoid anyone who reminds them they are doing wrong.
